I am continually impressed and awed by the resilience of Indigenous Peoples and communities across Canada. Despite the lack of progress in advancing the Truth and Reconciliation Commission’s 94 Calls to Action (released over a decade ago in 2015), they continue to assert their truths. They continue to fight with courage and humility for their truths to be shared and brought into the Canadian tapestry of cultures and historical storytelling in a genuinely respectful and compassionate way.
Two recent experiences for me that embodied this awe were as follows.
First, reading Michelle Good’s “Truth Telling” which provides incisive insights into Indigenous life in Canada, organized into seven concise chapters.

Second, taking the Bimose Kinoomagewnan trail (only 3.7 km long once you’ve done the drive to get to Pukaskwa National Park!). This trail includes views of a stunning inland lake surrounded by rock and forest with a series seven beautifully designed signs reflecting the Seven Grandfather Teachings as interpreted by members of the local Pic River First Nations.

These teachings are foundational Anishinaabe guiding principles that outline moral conduct and how to live in harmony with all creation.
- Love (Zaagi’idiwin): Represented by the Eagle, symbolizing unconditional affection, kindness, and peace.
- Respect (Manaaji’idiwin): Represented by the Buffalo, honoring all creation and treating life properly without waste.
- Courage / Bravery (Zoongide’ewin): Represented by the Bear, giving the strength to face fears and do what is right with integrity.
- Honesty (Gwayakwaadiziwin): Represented by the Sabe or Raven, meaning righteousness and truthfulness with oneself and others.
- Wisdom (Nibwaakaawin): Represented by the Beaver, showing that everyone has a special gift to use responsibly for the community.
- Humility (Dabasendiziwin): Represented by the Wolf, recognizing oneself as a sacred part of creation and thinking of others first.
- Truth (Debwewin): Represented by the Turtle, symbolizing the understanding of cultural teachings and living truly through all the other.
I highly commend and embrace these works and these teachings in honour of this National Day of Truth and Reconciliation.
